In today’s world, professionalism is being reshaped by social media and the growing need for digital skills. This change has powerful effects on how people present themselves both personally and professionally. Grasping the link between professional identity, social media, and digital skills is essential for the modern work environment.

I gave little thought to my professional identity and digital competencies prior to recent reflections.

While I have always prided myself on having a good professional reputation, I felt that my ‘professional identity’ was attached to my in-person work related activities and my overall reputation in the community. I have intentionally avoided social media and most digital platforms.

Likewise, I have generally considered myself to be moderately capable with digital resources but haven’t put much thought or effort into developing my digital skillset.

The Role of Social Media

Social media has changed how professionals network and communicate. Platforms such as LinkedIn, X, and Instagram enable individuals to display their skills and achievements in new ways. However, it is crucial to share content responsibly, keeping professionalism and integrity in mind.

Our audits have shown us that all digital content – including social media posts, but also things like product reviews – remain part of the public digital realm and can reflect on us both personally and professionally. As such, a conscious awareness of our own digital footprint as well as strong personal guidelines around digital presence are required for all digital interactions. Some of these guidelines could include: privacy settings, being conscious of the names used on public accounts, and an awareness and authenticity with content both published and engaged with.

Defining Professional Identity

Professional identity is the combination of values, beliefs, and actions that outline how people view themselves in their careers. Online presence significantly affects this identity, as digital platforms extend one’s professional image. By building a strong online presence, individuals can connect with peers, gain insights, and establish credibility in their fields.

I think that is timely for me to reconsider what kind of professional identity I want to put forth. My role has changed and with that my responsibility, influence, and visibility have also changed. I am now part of a broader structure that reaches even beyond the healthcare system. I will be seen both directly and indirectly by a much larger group and if I want continued career growth, I need to be mindful of how I am seen.

I value intelligence, awareness, confidence, integrity/authenticity, efficiency, and communication - and I want to convey these things in my personal and professional life.  For me I think that will look like a limited and highly curated social media presence as well as a fine-tuned digital skill set.

Understanding Digital Competency

Digital competency is the ability to use digital tools for effective communication, teamwork, and productivity. In today’s workplace, having strong digital skills is not just an option; it is an essential requirement. Professionals need to be skilled at using various technologies to excel in their roles.

I think that improving my digital competency will be my biggest takeaway from this exercise. Recently I have been introduced to a whole new set of digital tools which is both exciting and entirely unfamiliar. I, without question, see the value of becoming proficient with these tools. For me that means moving most of my work from paper to digital, including my calendar/scheduler/planner, meetings, documents and resources, while learning to use new platforms in order to do so.

Navigating the New Professional Landscape

The merging of professionalism, social media, and digital competency highlights the changing nature of how we work. Professionals need to understand how their online presence can influence their career paths. By refining their professional identities, strategically engaging with social media, and boosting their digital skills, individuals can set themselves up for success in a more interconnected world.
